After two successful first games at World Juniors 2022, the United States is looking to add three wins as Team USA takes on Austria on Saturday afternoon.

The Americans just beat Switzerland 7-1 on Thursday. While Switzerland made the first game very competitive, their legs wore out in the second, with the United States scoring five goals midway through the period to help them claim victory.

Tracker Logan Cooley

In each match, we’ll highlight one Team USA player to watch.

For the match against Austria, we will focus on Logan Cooley. The University of Minnesota commitment was selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft by the Coyotes. He scored a goal and assisted in the first two games of the tournament.

Cooley is a responsible two-way center with great offensive potential. He was one of the top point scorers in the USA National Team Development Program last season, thanks to his exceptional speed and ability to move the puck efficiently and quickly.

1st period

Cooley shows his pass early in the first, as he sends a pass from the wall to the furthest point, finding Matthew Coronato alone, who dances around Leon Sommer and finds the back of the net. Superb vision from Cooley in a bid to add his third point of the tournament.

We’ve seen a handful of Michigan tries, and Cooley adds to that list. He attempts the stick move behind the net, but is unable to complete the play, missing the net. This is the closest attempt I’ve seen so far. He has a certain skill in his toolkit that we’ve seen on occasion.

Obviously it’s Austria and it’s been all of the United States, but Cooley was arguably the best player there. He uses his speed and creativity to get the puck moving in the offensive zone and after his line had a quiet night against Switzerland, they cruised Austria early.

2nd period

15:08 β€” Another great change from the Cooley line to start the second. Cooley attempted another Michigan try but, again, was unsuccessful. You feel it today.

Final 1st period: USA 4, Austria 0

14:47 β€” All of the United States from start to finish. The second line of Cooley, Coronato and Matt Knies has been amazing so far, as has Kaiser on the blue line. It is clear that they can pretty much do whatever they want in the Austrian zone. A little creativity and extra chances are taken today and as long as no bad habits are formed from it, there’s nothing wrong with trying new moves for Team USA.

2:41 p.m. – GOAL! Red Savage runs away and appears to hit the crossbar, but seconds later the doorbell rings. He goes to check and enters clearly, hitting the crossbar and immediately leaving the net. It’s Savage’s second goal of the tournament.

14:29 β€” Less than a minute after Kaiser scored his second, Coronato almost got his second. A few nice passes leave Coronato alone in the slot, he goes in and hits the crossbar shot. Once again, Austria struggles to defend and leaves players open in A-level areas, which is not a recipe for success against USA.

14:28 – GOAL! It’s Kaiser again with a shot from the edge. Kaiser steps on the wrist that could have cut off the Austrian defender’s point, but it’s the number 2 goal of the day for Kaiser. A large screen in front of Charlie Stramel made it difficult for Sommer to follow the plan.

14:24 β€” It’s pretty clear that Austria is the weakest team USA has seen in this tournament. Team USA does what they want on the offensive side, constantly spinning the puck and working the point. Austria is also chasing a bit, which won’t work against the United States. Switzerland were effective when they stayed structured in their own zone and kept the United States out, but that’s not the case with Austria.

14:17 β€” The United States defense is caught sleeping and Moritz Lackner settles down alone behind them. Get a clean shot, but miss wide.

2:12 p.m. – GOAL! Matt Coronato makes it 2-0 when left alone in the Austrian net, passes Sommer and shoots into the open net. 2:32 into the first and the United States struck twice. Austria’s horrific defensive breakdown.

14:10 β€” OBJECTIVE! Team USA needs less than a minute to score as Wyatt Kaiser whistles one from the spot in front of Leon Sommer. Good screen in front by several bodies because the Americans are not wasting time.

before the match

1:30 p.m. – Some composition changes for the United States. Jack Peart returns, replacing Sean Behrens, who played for Peart in the game against Switzerland. Charlie Stramel debuts as Hunter McKown sits down. Andrew Oke starts at net after Kaiden Mbereko has started the first two contests.
